Hold out the cookie: making folks want to learn

Adult learning theories are legion.  Few recognize how much these theories are culturally based.  Participant-driven training concepts were developed in the high democratic U.S. culture.  In many parts of the world “authorities” esteemed for their degrees and certifications.

Just because you have been granted “authority” by the formal culture doesn’t mean you can motivate adults to want to learn.  If you motivate adults to learn then you don’t have to “teach” them.  They snatch learning with open fists.

The first thing I taught was the cello.  My teacher, Millie Rosner, had so carefully and unconsciously broken down the many tasks that go into the competency of playing the cello that picking up with others where she left off with me was a snap.
